Labour Migration.
The Institute has a long record of research in this area from the late 1980s. Migration has played a significant role both at the macro-economic level and at the micro household level. At the macro level remittances of labour migrants makes a critically important contribution to the country’s balance of payments. At the micro level it has contributed to the improvement of well-being of low income households and the reduction of poverty. The migration also raises long term concerns relating to the workforce needed to sustain a high rate of growth. The issues remain high on the Institute’s research agenda.
