Search for a National Identity based on Common Religious Values (Sponsored by FLICT)

The Marga Institute is currently conducting an opinion survey in 5 Districts (Colombo, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, Ampare and Jaffna) to ascertain the perceptions attitudes and views of people on issues relating to national identity. It is part of a larger project undertaken by the Marga Institute to examine what the Sri Lankan identity means to citizens and the extent to which all citizens enjoy a sense of belonging to and ownership of their country of birth and residence regardless of ethnic community, religion or other social grouping. The main objective of the project is to define, strengthen and develop the concept of the “Sri Lankan identity” in a form that would have value for all the citizens of Sri Lanka and become a strong unifying factor for Sri Lankan society as a whole. The report will made available by end August 2010
